In the tragic aftermath of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in which seventeen people were killed and fifteen wounded when a former student entered the school and opened fire with an AR-15 style rifle, Americans have spoken out en masse against Republicans’ inaction regarding gun control.
While the GOP fails to enact any legislation, Americans have taken it upon themselves to fill the void of leadership. The Parkland, Florida students have planned a massive march on March 24 to demand gun control and challenge the NRA’s stranglehold on the Republican Party.
This morning, Hollywood superstar actor George Clooney and his wife, international law and human rights lawyer, Amal Clooney, pledged to march with the Parkland students, as well as donate $500,000.
Now, Oprah, too, has pledged support for the movement, promising to match the Clooneys’ $500,000 donation.
George and Amal, I couldn’t agree with you more. I am joining forces with you and will match your $500,000 donation to ‘March For Our Lives.’ These inspiring young people remind me of the Freedom Riders of the 60s who also said we’ve had ENOUGH and our voices will be heard.

Between Oprah and the Clooneys, at least one million dollars will go to the March For Our Lives group, the organization planning the March 24th demonstration, and will help pay for the costs of the historic event.
It’s a moving gesture and it’s exactly the kind of thing every American with the means to do should be doing. We can no longer sit idly by while these horrific shootings massacre Americans en masse.
Were it not for easy accessibility to firearms, a young man wouldn’t be able to enter a store, purchase an AR-15 — a gun designed to kill enemy combatants on a battlefield — take it to a school and murder children. Guns themselves don’t kill people, sure, but they make it much, much, easier. We need new laws and we need them now.
Trump may have used his celebrity to exploit Americans by telling them what they wanted to hear, but celebrities with far greater star power are finally fighting back.
